Knowledge. Skills. Wisdom. Motivation.

At Certell, we’re often asked the question: “Why do you do what you do?” This inquiry is about why we develop social studies-related course materials and give them away free.

The short answer is because we have been there. We have been a new teacher looking for content and feeling overwhelmed by where to start. We have been a seasoned teacher who spends hours trying to curate great content on his or her own – and realizing there are not enough hours in the day to do it all. We have been teaching long enough to know that just teaching our students knowledge and skills or just teaching to the test is not enough. There is more that great teachers have to offer.

The extended answer is this: We believe that the process of education involves more than obtaining knowledge and developing and demonstrating skills. We think it also includes imparting wisdom, and motivating our students so that they realize learning is a lifelong endeavor that doesn’t end when the bell rings or when they earn a diploma. Most, if not all, teachers became teachers because they wanted to pass along a love for learning and to impart wisdom to their students.

In a traditional classroom, many teachers spend much of their time engaged in the transmission of knowledge to students, followed by a demonstration of the skills students obtain. Then, teachers are measured on their ability to transmit the required knowledge and skills, as measured by assessments. Knowledge, skills, test. And the cycle repeats.

As we mentioned, most teachers went into the profession specifically because they wanted to pass along motivation and wisdom to students. Yet, with limited time, only a little of it is left over to share wisdom and motivation. And we’re talking about real wisdom here. Not just a life tip for the day, but having the time for thought-provoking discussion that impacts a student for a lifetime.

We believe there is something wrong with this picture, and in the typical balance of time and energy a teacher spends on each of these four things: Knowledge, Skills, Wisdom and Motivation.

Certell’s creators believe that most of the knowledge and skills aspects of curriculum can be taught more effectively by leveraging current technology and engaging in the use of today’s popular media. We build our curriculum and courses to use technology to transmit much of the knowledge and skills demonstration, so teachers like you can spend their time and energy on imparting wisdom. This may involve discussing the bigger questions of how the material relates to students’ lives and giving more attention to each students’ needs.

And what about motivation? Well, let’s face it, students will always need someone to keep them on task – at least some of the time. That’s why Certell’s video-rich, popular media-based materials make it easier to motivate students by being fast paced, engaging and fun.

We believe that teachers have a lifelong impact on their students' lives, and we want to help you spend more of your time imparting wisdom. Teaching is about engaging with your students: Getting students to think and develop dialog to support their thoughts. Learning happens when students become involved. And lifelong learning happens when teachers spend time imparting their wisdom to help students make better choices – motivating them to be active participants in class, life and society.
