Read: On August 1, the first article on the Watergate Break in was published in the Washington Post.

The Watergate Scandal involved the illegal break-in of the Democratic National Committee on June 17, 1972. Its cover up by Richard Nixon led to his resignation and a major change in the way the presidency was viewed in the United States.

What was so significant about the Watergate Scandal? Discuss how, today, Americans look at controversies in its leadership. What other presidential scandals have occurred since Nixon and Watergate? Are there objective standards against which we judge the behavior of government officials today? Or do you think that the arguments used by us, the media, and other politicians are driven more by party affiliations or sympathies?
