Oct. 3 – Lincoln and Thanksgiving

ryanAmerican History(BR), Bell Ringers

On Oct. 3, 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln declared that there should be a national day of thanksgiving:

In his speech, Lincoln points to all the advances the nation is making, despite the war raging in the South.

Some say that we live in a time of increasing division in the country, but no one would claim that our current divisions rise to the level of those which were present in 1863.

  1. What are some of the things that unite the country today?
  2. What things are happening that would be a cause for thanksgiving?
