Oct. 3, 1863 – Lincoln and Thanksgiving
On Oct. 3, 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln declared that there should be a national day of thanksgiving:
In his speech, Lincoln points to all the advances the nation is making, despite the war raging in the South.
Some say that we live in a time of increasing division in the country, but no one would claim that our current divisions rise to the level of those which were present in 1863.
